John William Waterhouse (1849-1917)

John William Waterhouse was a painter of classical, historical and literary subjects. He was born in Rome in 1849, where his father worked as a painter. In the 1850s the family returned to England. Before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1870, Waterhouse assisted his father in his studio. His early works were of classical themes in the spirit of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton, and were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists and the Dudley Gallery. In the late 1870s and the 1880s, Waterhouse made several trips to Italy, where he painted genre scenes.
In 1883 Waterhouse married to Esther Kenworthy. He used to paint primarly in oils. In 1884 his painting Consulting The Oracle, his Royal Academy submission, gained favourable reviews. His painting Lady Of Shalott, reveals Waterhouse's growing interest in The Pre-Raphaelites.
In many of his works models are depicted as femme fatales, such as Circe Invidiosa, Cleopatra, La Belle Dame Sans Merci and several versions of Lamia.
In 1885 Waterhouse was elected an associate of the Royal Academy and a full member in 1895. His RA diploma work was A Mermaid. However, as this painting was not completed until 1900, Waterhouse offered his Ophelia of 1888 as his temporary submission.

In the mid-1880s Waterhouse began exhibiting with the Grosvenor Gallery and its successor, the New Gallery, as well as at provincial exhibitions in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. Paintings of this period, such as Mariamne, were exhibited widely in England and abroad as part of the international symbolist movement. In the 1890s Waterhouse began to exhibit portraits. In 1900 he was the primary instigator of the Artists' War Fund, creating Destiny, and contributing to a theatrical performance. The pictures offered to the War Fund were auctioned at Christie's. In 1901 he moved to St John's Wood and joined the St John's Wood Arts Club, a social organization that included Alma-Tadema and George Clausen. He also served on the advisory council of the St. John's Wood Art School where young and upcoming "neo Pre-Raphaelite" artists such as Byam Shaw numbered amongst his pupils.
Despite suffering from increasing frailty during the final decade of his life, Waterhouse continued painting until his death from cancer in 1917. From 1908-1914 he painted a series of paintings based upon the Persephone legend. They were followed by pictures based upon literature and mythology in 1916 (Miranda, Tristram and Isolde). One of his final works was The Enchanted Garden, left unfinished on his easel at his death, and now in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool.

George Frederic Watts (1817-1904)

George Frederic or Frederick Watts was an English Victorian painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist movement. He was born in London and was the son of a poor piano-maker. His mother died at an early age and so was raised and educated by his father with conservative christian interpretations as well as with classic masterpieces such as Iliad, which later influenced him on his art. He learned sculpture at the age of 10 with William Behnes and studied in detail the Elgin Marbles and at the age of 18 was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art. He took part in a competition to design murals for the Houses of Parliament at Westminster in 1843 with a drawing Caractacus and won the first prize. The prize fund him a long visit to Italy where Watts became close friend with the British ambassador and his family. There, he began to paint landscapes and entered an another new competition for the Houses of Parliament with Alfred Inciting the Saxons to Prevent the Landing of the Danes by Encountering them at Sea. He had a brief stay in Florence and then returned to Britain.

                                                                                 choosing

Watts joined the Prinsep circle of bohemians and in 1850 helped the Prinseps into a 21-year lease on Little Holland House and stayed with them for the next 21 years. While living in the house some of his paintings were exhibited in Whitechapel and received a comission for the Houses of Parliament. In 1860's in his works the influence of Rossetti is obvious emphasising on rich colour. In 1864 he marries Ellen Terry and in less than a year he divorces her.
Watts's association with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the Aesthetic movement altered during the 1870s, as his work increasingly combined Classical traditions with a deliberately agitated and troubled surface, in order to suggest the dynamic energies of life and evolution, as well as the tentativeand transitory qualities of life.

In the early 1870's he comissioned a new London home. In 1886 he gets re-married to Mary Fraser-Tytler. Many of his paintings are held at the Tate Gallery and in 1867 he was elected as an academician to the Royal Academy.
In his late paintings, Watts' creative aspirations mutate into mystical images such as The Sower of the Systems, in which Watts seems to anticipate abstract art. This painting depicts God as a barely visible shape in an energised pattern of stars and nebulae. Some of Watts' other late works also seem to anticipate the paintings of Picasso's Blue Period. He was also admired as a portrait painter. In his portraits Watts sought to create a tension between disciplined stability and the power of action. During his last years Watts also turned to sculpture and his most famous work is a large bronze statue Physical Energy at Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town in South Africa.
